General Description: The Ouse is very cold, with the dificulty of the first 2 km to Monpeelyata weir starting at grade 1 and increasing to 3+ just before the weir pondage, at the Deep Creek confluence. A 7+ m weir at Grid ref: 700 487 forms intake to Monpeelyata Canal, and is a compulsory portage. After the weir, 18 km of paddling remains with difficulty building from pool-drop grade 3 to continuous grade 3-4 rapids in the final gorge before the take-out. This is a classic section of river that rarely flows due to the Liawenee and Monpeelyata weirs diverting all normal river flows. |
